Oil Painting lesson with Gregory Smith - Day 9

Paige is an apprentice at Zucci Hairdressing in Ivanhoe. She's not only into design and art, but also paints in oil.
That means she's got a right ingredient to progress as a hairstylist.
In my opinion, without possessing a deep understanding of art and design, one can't cut a hair.

I asked her to be our portrait model, and she was kind enough to come to Greg's studio this afternoon.
Everybody in the class said that she is a joy to paint.

As usual, I started Raw Umber wash and wipe-off with a rag.
Greg told me that I should firstly rely on my instinct, then measure its proportions and check.
I like his method, because I can develop my sense of proportion better that way.

Then, I put Light Red wash all over skin, wiped off highlight area, put darks to expand tonal scale.

Skin tone at this stage is basically a mixture of White, Light Red and Naples Yellow Deep.

I feel her body is a bit too big and I'll have to check its proportion very carefully next week.
However, overall I'm reasonably happy with this first session.

Work in progress. 16 x 20 in.
