Paint Out Day with Gregory Smith

Greg and John organise this plein air painting session on the last Sunday of each month.
We love joining this VAS event, meeting lots of fellow artists in the open field.
We hugely appreciate their effort.
Greg's been doing for 26 or so years, I was told. What an amazing achievement!

Today is the last session of the year, and we drove to Memorial Cross in Mt Macedon, about an hour drive north-west of Melbourne.

I've never been to this place. There are so many great spots near the top area.
We decided to set up our easels here.
It offers a magnificent view of Macedon mountain ranges.

My biggest challenge today was to create depth of the space, paying close attention to subtle tonal changes.

I'm reasonably happy with it. However, I really struggled with the foreground trees. I've no idea what kind of trees they are, but very tall and there are so many branches towards bottom.
I didn't know how to render them and ended up randomly painting vertical lines.
I'll ask Greg's opinion tomorrow.

With very mild weather, fresh air and lovely people, it really was a great day.

Oil on panel. 16 x 20 in.
