Oil Painting lesson with Gregory Smith - Day 8

Today, I painted a background and put some colours on the objects.

Focus of this painting is a cast of baby at front.
I spent a lot of time trying to get it right tonally, but, found it very difficult.
Greg told me to see it as a block of tonal shape, like mosaic.
It's like sculptor shaping a marble with a chisel. We as painters create complicated shapes using brushes.

You see, towards the end of lesson, he put tiny Raw Umber on the side of its nose.
Just like that. it changed everything.
I need to be more brave.

I really like his way of looking at shapes.

Work in progress. 16 x 20 in.
