Portrait painting lesson with Gregory Smith - Day 1

Today is the first day of this two day portrait painting lesson at Victorian Artists' Society in north Melbourne.

The class was conducted by Greg's demo first, and we started our own paintings.
And then, he did the second demo, building on the previous one.....
I really liked this step by step format. It's much more conducive to our understanding.
Every single advice he gave us sounded like a word of wisdom.
It's really a great privilege to learn from him.

It's amazing to see how much tonal colour variation can be created with very limited pallet.
White, Ivory Black, Light Red, Naples Yellow Deep, Raw Umber, Cad Red. They're the only colours I used today.

I still struggle with seeing tonally, and this is unfinished work, but, it was truly a great lesson.

Apart from the photo below, the rest were taken with my iPhone.
I forgot to bring my camera!

Anne.
2 1/2 hours. Unfinished.
Oil on panel. 16 x 20 in.
