Michael Palin and the Mystery of Hammershoi

I love these documentaries by Palin. This one particularly is one of the best. Beautifully produced and presented, it offers us a meditative journey into the mind of this not so well-known Danish artist, Vilhelm Hammweshoi. 

I had never come across this artist. I’ve been reading a lot about him since. 

The comparison with Vermeer is so obvious. Unlike Vermeer’s super sharp, sort of high mega pixel like paintings, his paintings are more like old Polaroid. Much softer, poetic and lyrical. Well, that’s my impression. I like them a lot. 

I wouldn’t have known this fascinating artist and his beautiful work without this documentary.
