Love, Love, Love at Heidelberg Theatre Company

Interesting inter generational conflict written by Mike Bartlett.
As expected from this reputable theatre company, rock solid performances by all the performers, particularly Genya Mik as Sandra.
Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity to see it.

Christmas Carol at Comedy Theatre

I went to see this classic with my client Aya.
Oh, what a delightful experience watching marvellous performances and stage set!
One of the best I've seen recently.
Thank you so much for bringing this to Melbourne.

Cost of living by Melbourne Theatre Company

Because of Grand Final, which I've no interest in, tonight's performance was offered at $35 and I took it.
The venue was almost 80% empty, that clearly shows how much Melburnians are intoxicated by football.

I asked an usher if it's ok to change the seating so that I can sit farther at back. She said No and told me to go to the reception and "seek permission". What the heck? The place is almost empty.
I went to the reception and said I was told to get a "permission" and she gave me a seat which turned out to be a few rows behind the original seat, which I took.
Then I saw quite a few audience were changing their seat, some of them were actually asking the same usher and obviously she didn't tell them to go to the reception because they just moved to different seats.
Well, of course I moved farther back, this time without asking the usher, because the venue was almost empty!

Martyna Majok's play deals with very heavy social issues but I found it doesn't give us a cohesive narrative. Particularly the relationship between Ani and Eddi wasn't developed thoroughly enough to keep my attention.
The play began with his long monologue and I was already bored.
On the other hand, I thought John and Jess's characters were more interesting.
In the end, Jess and Eddie's characters coverage in a very touching way, but even this I found it too contrived.

All characters were performed superbly and I liked stage design.

And a nightingale sang by Heidelberg Theatre Company

It's so annoying to sit next to women talking to each other during a live performance. I had to move away from them, fortunately there was an empty seat at back.

Another great performance and production design. 'Granda' was very funny.
The problem I had with this play by C.P. Taylor was the character 'Norman'. I thought his dillydallying was very frustrating.

Chapter two at Essendon Theatre Company

The first time I came to this lovely venue, very friendly staff and a big space.
This Neil Simon's play is less slapstick comedy than his other stuff, I often find his comedy is too over the top, this one is actually very touching in some scenes.
Brilliantly acted by the cast, beautiful stage set, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Flick by Madeleine Nunn at La Mama

I first saw Madeleine in "Garage Girls", a story about Alice Anderson. It was a truly impressive performance and I was immediately taken by her talent.

"Flick" is written by her and performed solo. It follows the similar format in which she skilfully conducts 'situation analysis' in rapid succession. The tone of the story swiftly changes from minor key to major key and back again, for example.
The theme of the play, which includes death and grief, is a very heavy one, but thanks to her superb writing style and flawless acting, the audience found ourselves laughing quite a lot. Philosophically the play is very deep and thought provoking all the more so because of that.

I also liked the bare stage set. Sound effects were timely and very effective.

To be able to carry the viewers in this iconic venue through the story of this magnitude without any moment of lapse is a testament to her singular creative talent.

I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

PS. I got a winning raffle ticket. That was nice.

Admissions by Brighton Theatre Company

Written by Joshua Harmon, it's a powerful play about ethical idealism vs practical reality. I'm not so sure how much the audience gets it when it comes to the enormity of going to the "top" universities and its implications for the rest of one's life. Unlike Japan or US, I don't think it matters that much here in Australia. Well, that's my impression.

As always, all the cast did a splendid performance, particularly Sam Wyles.

Wait Until Dark at Heidelberg Theatre Company

A powerful mystery drama at my favourite venue.
Having said that, I must say, this play didn't impress me that much, especially towards the end when Susan started attacking the bad guys in the dark. I just thought these scenes were unbelievable.
It's a pity because the first half was very good.

The Sunline by Malevich Theatre at Russian House

When I was cutting my client Anna's hair in the salon, I was invited to this theatre play. I've never heard of the playwright Ivan Vyrypaev, apparently the most famous contemporary writer.

It's a fast paced philosophical investigation into the couple's relationships, performed powerfully by two actors in this beautiful building in Fitzroy.

I'm a big fan of Chekhov, so, it was a good opportunity to experience another Russian play.

Hydra by Brighton Theatre Company

An intriguing story of George Johnson and Charmaine Clift. Although I've never heard of them, the play successfully portrayed their tumultuous but affectionate relationships.

Mamma Mia at Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School

A fabulous production of this iconic musical in the beautiful theatre space.
I always get an enormously positive energy when watching high school productions. And, what an amazing talent these young ones possess.
Thank you so much for your hard work.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Garage Girls at La Mama

I've seen this fabulous play online last year, and today I had an opportunity to see at La Mama in Carlton, a very charming venue.
The story of Alice Anderson itself is very fascinating.
The fast paced production is very well thought out with all star cast, particularly Madelaine Nunn as Alice, an enormous talent.
I'd love to see this as a featured film.
I can't resist the idea that Alice and Clarice Beckett knew each other, driving a car in Melbourne.
Also, there's a great book by Loretta Smith, "A spanner in the works". She was featured in this podcast. The link is here

Berlin by Heidelberg Theatre Company

A powerful play by Joanna Murray-Smith at my favourite venue in Rosanna.
I've seen it before, but, it still makes me think about the complexity of its storyline.

"Love Song" by Brighton Theayre Company

My favourite theatre company with solid performances.
I thought the story line is a bit weak with regards to "the infectious effect of love and the redemptive power of hope".

The heartbreak choir by Melbourne Theatre Company

It's been raining all day long. I "rented" this production online.
A great story with solid performers who can definitely sing so well, particularly Emily Milledge.

"Miss Saigon" at Her Majesty's Theatre

Putting aside the controversial nature of the story, particularly the depiction of Vietnamese women, this is one of the best musical productions I've seen recently. The sheer scale of it baffles me considering the small space in the theatre.
What an amazing talent these actors show on stage.

"Ladies in Black" by Heidelberg Theatre Company

A wonderful musical performed brilliantly by all the cast in this lovely venue.
The story, music and costumes...
Rafaela Cleeve Gerkins, Maree Barnett, Matt Biscombe, to name a few. What a talent!!
One of the best musical I've seen recently. No wonder it's sold out.
I'm looking forward to their 2024 productions.

"Art" by The 1812 Thetre

A well known play by Yasmina Reza, and I was looking forward to this.
However, I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. Maybe because it's so familiar, but also there was this hissing noise during the play not sure what it was. Hearing aid? Very annoying.
The venue was half empty. It tells something I guess.
It's really a shame, this is one of my favourite theatre companies.
